Doctor makes worrying claim that ‘every new patient’ at cancer clinic is under 45 and blames one thing

Cancer arises from multiple factors, but a growing number of cases in people under 45 share a common link: diets high in junk food and processed meats. Dr. Nicholas DeVito, an oncologist at Duke University, has observed a sharp rise in gastrointestinal cancers, particularly in younger generations.

Research links ultra-processed foods—like fast food, sodas, and processed meats—to increased cancer risk, especially colorectal and esophageal cancers. These foods are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, and lack fiber and nutrients. They also contain additives and nitrates that may damage cells and trigger harmful mutations.

More than 60% of the average American diet comes from ultra-processed foods. Doctors recommend limiting these items and choosing whole, nutrient-rich alternatives. Regularly eating processed meat has even been classified as carcinogenic by the World Health Organization.

To reduce cancer risk, experts urge people to minimize consumption of fast food and processed meats, especially starting at a young age.
