Erika, a 6-year-old girl reported missing, was found dead in a ditch on a ranch.
According to the media outlet Debate, the events took place at the El Limonar ranch, in the community of Cruz Naranjos, municipality of Tuxpan, in the northern state of Veracruz.
The night before, the girl’s parents reported her missing after returning from shopping and not finding her at home.
According to the parents’ report, they left their home in the afternoon to go shopping. When they returned, Erika was no longer home, so they immediately began a search.
After receiving no results, they formally filed a complaint this Monday with the Comprehensive Justice Administration Unit in Tuxpan.
According to Milenio, the girl’s father confirmed the discovery, with the support of day laborers working at the El Limonar ranch, pruning trees near high-voltage power lines belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission.
From the top of a hydraulic basket, one of the workers observed the girl’s body half-submerged in a ditch filled with water, due to the recent rains caused by Tropical Storm Barry.
Members of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office based in Tuxpan responded to the scene to remove the body and transfer it to the Forensic Medical Service, where the exact cause of death will be determined.
Although it is presumed that the minor was walking and accidentally fell into the ditch, authorities have not ruled out other lines of investigation.
