Five members of the same family lost their lives and a minor was seriously injured after a serious accident occurred Saturday night on the Siglo XXI Highway, between kilometer 178 and 300, on the Cuatro Caminos–Las Cañas stretch. The trailer involved in the accident fled the scene, according to local authorities.
The victims, originally from the community of San Pedro Barajas, in the municipality of La Huacana, Michoacán, were returning from a trip to the port of Lázaro Cárdenas in a gray Nissan pickup truck with license plate NL8858V. During their journey, they were struck by a white and blue double-trailer tractor-trailer, which ended up overturned on the side of the road.
At the scene of the accident, paramedics and firefighters located four lifeless people inside the private vehicle and another person dead a few meters away. The sole survivor, Keiry Dayana, an 11-year-old girl, was rushed to a nearby hospital; her condition is reported to be serious.
The State Attorney General’s Office identified the deceased as Víctor Hugo M., Ana María G., Teresa Ch., José S., and the minor, Carmelo M., all residents of San Pedro Barajas. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine responsibility and locate the truck driver, who fled the scene after the collision.
Following the tragedy, families of the victims yesterday blocked both lanes of the Siglo XXI Highway, as well as the freeway, demanding that the company that owned the trailer or its insurance company take responsibility for medical, funeral, and compensation expenses for the tragic accident.
