The salesman stared at the old man as if the floor had shifted beneath him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy father?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas nodded once, his eyes never leaving the young man\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBack then, this place looked different. Cheaper lights. Smaller office. Same polished floor. Same kind of smile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager lowered his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because he knew the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas rested his hand on the old leather briefcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI came in wearing my work clothes after a fourteen-hour shift at a machine shop,\u201d he said. \u201cI had spent seven years saving for one car. Not this one. Nothing flashy. Just one decent car for the woman I was going to marry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The showroom had gone silent enough to hear the air conditioning hum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour father looked at my clothes,\u201d Mr. Thomas continued, \u201cand told me men like me should stop dreaming in places built for better people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The salesman\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman beside him looked horrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas\u2019s voice stayed calm, but somehow that made it hit harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI left that day with no car. But I also left with something else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn understanding. That some people don\u2019t sell machines. They sell humiliation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young salesman swallowed hard. \u201cI\u2019m not my father.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Mr. Thomas said. \u201cYou\u2019re worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That landed like a slap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause he did it out of arrogance,\u201d the old man continued. \u201cYou did it out of habit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager closed his eyes for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Mr. Thomas reached into his jacket and pulled out an old folded photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He handed it to the salesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the photo was a young version of Mr. Thomas standing outside a tiny rented apartment beside a smiling pregnant woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And parked behind them was a cheap used car with a ribbon on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The salesman frowned. \u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe car I bought two months later from another dealership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His finger touched the woman in the photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe died in that car on the way to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody breathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The salesman looked up, stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas\u2019s eyes were glassy now, but his voice never shook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I had gotten the safer model I came here for first, she might have lived long enough for the doctors to save them both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman in beige covered her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager whispered, \u201cSir\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Mr. Thomas kept staring at the salesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor twenty years, I came back to this building every year and left without stepping inside. Today I wanted to see whether this place had changed\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes moved across the salesman and the colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026or whether it was still teaching cruelty in a clean white suit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The salesman looked like he might collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Mr. Thomas picked up the briefcase and turned toward the manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll still take the car,\u201d he said. \u201cBut not for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager blinked. \u201cSir?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas looked toward the glass entrance of the showroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside, through the bright reflection, a thin teenage boy stood frozen on the sidewalk in a delivery uniform, staring in disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Thomas\u2019s face softened for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s for the kid outside,\u201d he said. \u201cThe one your salesman laughed at this morning for asking how much the cheapest car costs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The salesman spun around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His expression broke completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the boy outside\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
