Around them, the gala hall was silent now, the miracle already forgotten under the weight of something even bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She dropped slowly back to her knees in front of him, pale blue silk pooling around her, her hands trembling as they reached toward the pendant without quite touching it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAunt?\u201d she repeated, her voice breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy nodded, tears running freely now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mom said if I found you, I should show you this first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman shook her head, overwhelmed, looking from the crest to his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is your mother\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He swallowed hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLena.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name shattered her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She covered her mouth, eyes flooding. For a moment she was no longer in the gala hall at all. She was somewhere years earlier, laughing with her younger sister, fighting with her, losing her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLena\u2026\u201d she whispered. \u201cNo. They told me she was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy shook his head quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the woman really broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She grabbed his shoulders gently, searching his face like she might find her sister there\u2014and she did. In his eyes. In the line of his mouth. In the trembling bravery he was trying so hard to hold together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere is she?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy\u2019s lips trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words cut straight through her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pulled a folded note from his pocket and pushed it into her shaking hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe said you wouldn\u2019t believe me,\u201d he whispered. \u201cSo she told me to tell you\u2026 you hid together in the church attic when you were little. And that you were the only one who never stopped singing when she was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman gasped softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one else could have known that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She opened the note with trembling fingers. Even before she finished the first line, she was crying too hard to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy watched her like everything in his life depended on what happened next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he said the line that finished undoing her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
