He only shifted slightly so she was fully behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hand rested on the edge of the overturned table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other bikers locked into position around the diner like a line being drawn in blood and habit. One of them checked the rear exit. Another braced a chair under a window frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the bald biker stayed at the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the door and the girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biker looked down slightly at the girl behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice dropped just enough for her to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lock clicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The door opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light from outside spilled into the diner in a sharp line, cutting across the floor like a blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man stepped in first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well-dressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too clean for the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind him, two more silhouettes filled the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And further back\u2014barely visible past the glass\u2014men moving around the white truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a chase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A retrieval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man in front looked at the biker and then at the overturned tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sighed, almost disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe could\u2019ve done this quietly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biker didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man\u2019s eyes shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the girl\u2019s voice, small but clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glass rattled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diner exploded into motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even as chaos began, the biker\u2019s focus didn\u2019t break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because behind him, the girl had stopped shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because she was safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because she finally believed someone would stand between her and what was coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man outside adjusted his coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for the first time since the engines arrived, he stepped forward\u2014away from the wall, away from cover, away from anything that looked like defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toward the open doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toward the men who thought they were the hunters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
