They were deliberate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fourth knock came, weaker this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lowering straps creaked as one of the pallbearers stumbled backward, hands lifting away like the wood had turned into something dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d someone whispered behind the umbrellas. \u201cNo, that\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old woman in pearls froze mid-step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her face had already gone past grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it was something sharper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition trying not to form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bride stayed on her knees, soaked through, staring at the coffin like it had finally admitted the truth it had been holding hostage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That small movement broke the cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOpen it!\u201d someone shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo\u2014stop the burial!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCall security!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But nobody moved fast enough, because fear always takes longer than panic to organize itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old woman stepped forward, her umbrella dropping from her hand and rolling into the mud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you are inside that coffin,\u201d she said, not to the crowd but to the wood itself, \u201cthen answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the rain seemed to hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, from inside the coffin, a voice came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoarse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But unmistakably alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t\u2026 lower it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gasps ripped through the mourners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pallbearer rushed to the mechanism, hands shaking so badly he nearly dropped the release lever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bride pressed her forehead against the coffin lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho are you?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A long pause followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe one they didn\u2019t finish burying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sentence landed heavier than the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it wasn\u2019t confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t delirium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From outside the graveyard gate, somewhere in the fog, a distant engine started\u2014then stopped abruptly, as if someone had realized too late they were being followed by consequences they could no longer outrun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old woman\u2019s knees buckled slightly as she whispered, almost to herself now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bride turned sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The soaked certificate slipped from her fingers into the mud, forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because now there was only one question left that mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the coffin was occupied by someone who should not be there\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then where was the man they had all just buried?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
