Kattia Jara Sancho, 53, died from multiple stab wounds; the suspect is her 24-year-old son.

Crying and cursing, this is how the Public Force arrested a man named Paiz, 24, suspected of stabbing to death his mother, Kattia de los Ángeles Jara Sancho, 53.

A group of elderly residents of Santa Bárbara de Heredia were sitting in a hallway when they saw the police pull up in front of them, and then heard the man’s alleged wails.

“Something must have happened here?” one of them asked, unaware of the incident. The officers were then heard saying, “He’s going to pay for what he did. He killed his mother.”

“What do you mean, he killed Kattia? Oh, my goodness,” said one of the women who was at the scene where they filmed.

This is how they arrested the only suspect in the murder of Kattia.

The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon. Apparently, the victim was living under threat from her own son, whom they say is a suspected drug user. The man allegedly constantly demanded money from her.

Paiz is in the hands of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will transfer him to the Heredia Court to determine precautionary measures.

2025 is one of the most violent years against women. Judicial statistics indicate that 26 women have been killed in the first three months of the year, 13 of them femicides.

Data shows that five have occurred per month. In January, Ingrid Espinoza was killed, murdered on January 1 in Guararí, Heredia.

On January 23, Tamara Centeno was killed in San Ramón de Alajuela.

Then, on January 26, two women were murdered, the suspects being their partners: Sandra Oporta, attacked in San Carlos, and Maribeth Mondragón in Heredia. On January 27, Miriam Fernández was killed in Cahuita, in the Caribbean.

In February, the tragedies continued. On February 9, Sofía Calvo was killed in Alajuela; on February 15, Juliana Valverde was killed in Chomes de Puntarenas; and on February 20, two more deadly attacks against women occurred: Katherine López in Liberia and María Julia Dittel in Turrialba.

Maritza Chavarría passed away on February 24 in Alajuelita.

The unfortunate events continued this March, with the deaths of Joanna Quirós Chacón, murdered in a tenement in San José; Hazel González in La Trinidad de Moravia; and the most recent victim, Kattia Jara in Heredia.
