
An armed attack that occurred last night in the Barrio Nuevo neighborhood of Irapuato, Guanajuato, left 10 people dead and at least 12 more injured. The victims were participating in a popular celebration for Saint John the Baptist’s Day when they were surprised by a group of armed men who opened fire on the crowd.
The attack occurred at the intersection of Bustamante and Comonfort streets, where residents were socializing on the street. According to initial reports and videos circulating on social media, the attendees were listening to banda music and making a circle when multiple gunshots rang out, causing panic among the mostly young people present.
Videos posted on social media show the exact moment of the shooting, while the strains of a festive song can be heard. Dozens of people tried to flee the scene, but several were hit by bullets. Municipal authorities confirmed that 10 people died at the scene and that 12 more were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
In an official statement, the Irapuato municipal government condemned the incident and expressed its solidarity with the affected families:
The municipal government and public administration regret and condemn the attack that occurred Tuesday night at a home on Bustamante Street in the Barrio Nuevo neighborhood, and express their solidarity with the victims, their families, and the public affected by this cowardly act.
Officers from the State Attorney General’s Office and forensic experts collected evidence during the early morning hours, while National Guard and Municipal Police officers secured the area. So far, no suspects have been arrested, and a multiple homicide investigation has been opened.
