The “fortune” Pope Francis left behind after his death: what assets did he own and how much is his estate?

The death of  Pope Francis  has impacted millions of faithful around the world within the  Catholic Church . His figure transcended the religious: he was a spiritual, political and social leader who marked an era for his progressive approach, his closeness to the people and, above all, for his coherence between words and actions.

However, unlike other world leaders,  Jorge Mario Bergoglio  did not leave behind a vast fortune, but rather a life of humility and material detachment that surprised the world even after his death.

According to the British newspaper  Mirror , Pope Francis  was entitled to an annual salary of approximately 340,000 euros since he was elected Supreme Pontiff in 2013. However, due to his membership in the  Society of Jesus,  the Pope took a vow of poverty and decided not to receive that salary at any time during his pontificate.

Instead of living in the luxurious papal apartments used by his predecessors, Francis chose to reside in  Casa Santa Marta,  a small residence within the  Vatican  , where he led a much simpler life. Throughout his papacy, he rejected many luxuries and maintained a modest routine, although all necessary expenses, such as food, travel, security, and lodging, were covered by the Vatican.

This is the amount Bergoglio kept in his bank account.

According to the Spanish media outlet  Marca , citing information from the  Celebrity Net Worth website , Pope Francis’ personal wealth at the time of his death was just  $100 , or less than €90, and he owned no property, personal bank accounts, or investments.

His lifestyle was always sober and far removed from the ostentation that has surrounded the high  ecclesiastical hierarchy  in other eras. His legacy is not measured in material possessions, but in his impact on millions of lives and the impetus he gave to a more open, supportive, and caring Church closer to the poor.
