According to many psychotherapists and body language experts, when we sleep, our body frees itself from the grip of our consciousness and reveals a multitude of things hidden in our unconscious… In the case of couples, this could translate into several very specific positions, which betray the emotional situation that we are experiencing with our couple…
But then, what happens when we sleep alone? Well, it’s the same, there are very specific postures for which body language experts have distinguished different major profiles.
According to a study by Chris Idzikowski, researcher and author of the book “Learning to Sleep,” nearly 40% of people who sleep individually do so in the fetal position.
Of course, we don’t always sleep in the same position, which can reflect changes in our mood over the days. And our bodies move a lot during the night, a natural reflex that allows blood to circulate properly and cells to regenerate.
But try to identify the position in which you are most likely to fall asleep, normally. This is the position in which you are most likely to be comfortable drifting off to sleep.
What’s your favorite way to sleep? Pick one and read on to see what it says about you.
Log
This posture is characterized by straight, stretched legs, a straight back, and arms at the sides of the body. One arm can be tucked under the pillow or resting on the mattress. According to Idzikowski’s study, approximately 15% of the population sleeps in this position. Generally, people who adopt this type of position are uninhibited, with a relaxed and coherent personality. They are extremely social individuals who get along well with everyone and feel particularly comfortable when they are part of a group. They do not like to be alone, they have great trust in other people, but they are sometimes a little naive and innocent.
Sighing
The back is straight, perhaps slightly curved, but the legs are slightly inclined forward. One hand is stretched forward, the other can go under the pillow or on the mattress. This position is a bit like a kind of lying hug. The study claims that 13% of the population prefers this position for sleeping. These are individuals characterized by a more complex personality, who nevertheless need affection. Although these people are generally friendly and open, they also have a cynical side that makes them doubt others and do not easily trust. They think a lot about the consequences of their actions, but once they make a decision, it is almost impossible to change their mind. They can be the best friends in the world, and reward with infinite tenderness those who truly deserve it.
Soldier
A person who sleeps in this position lies on their back, with their legs and arms stretched out (usually along the body). This position is not common, and only 8% of the population sleeps on their backs like this. These people are characterized by a rather reserved behavior. They are quiet people who don’t talk much, and other people don’t know much about them because they like to remain a little secretive. They don’t like average and mediocre things; they are perfectionists at heart. They tend to set very ambitious goals and set the bar high, sometimes too high. They are loyal people, very protective of their family and loved ones. They place enormous value on the bonds they have with others.
Free fall
This is the position adopted by those who sleep on their stomach, with their head turned to one side or the other and their hands under or beside the pillow. Only 7% of people seem to sleep in this position. These are great dreamers, sociable, intense, sometimes even a little cheeky people, but who actually hide a very great sensitivity.
They are also, and above all, creative people, fervent lovers of freedom in all areas, and they cannot stand criticism.
Star of me
Followers of this position sleep on their backs, with their arms partially or completely wrapped around a pillow. Their legs are slightly bent outwards, or one is straight and the other is spread apart. This is the least common of all positions, as only 5% of people sleep this way. These people are good listeners, have great empathy, and are always willing to help. They like to be the center of attention when in a group.
Fetus
As we mentioned earlier, this is the most common position, with 41% of the population adopting it. Women are twice as likely to adopt it as men! A person who sleeps in this position generally has their knees drawn towards the body, their back is lying on the side and slightly curved, and their arms can be crossed or close to the legs. There are many variations of this position. When the position is very accentuated, it can symbolize a desire to return to childhood since it is the position of the baby in its mother’s womb. In general, people who sleep in this way are sensitive, very emotional people who tend to have more intense relationships. They may seem shy at first, but when you really know them, you realize that they are loving people, full of tenderness, and who are afraid of being hurt emotionally.
